A hand crank machine is totally impractical for most work because you lack control because you can only use one hand. The speed is much less than either electric or treadle too. Using sewing machine attachments, such as hemmers and darners is all but impossible. They are very good for small work that needs exact sewing and they, of course, make excellent decorations in any sewing room. Other than that, they are pretty useless in the sewing room, due to lack of control.

my grandpa just got a singer 66 sewing machine. His is a treadle, not a hand crank. I love the look at these antiques that are dated back to the 1850′s. It is so cool. I also like to compare them to today’s sewing machines to those ones.

Mines kinda like yours in a carry case like that, but mine is electric with a bar that slots into a hole on the front wood panel and you push it with your knee to control the machine. Does yours have a little table that slots into the hole next to the bobbin?

Hi,I also have a handcrank, isn’t the experience sewing on these amazing. I love to hear the music my handcrank makes. Do you or have you sewn anything yet? Thanks for posting this great video, I really enjoyed watching.

Aloha to you! I’ve never sewn on a treadle machine, but if I had to guess I’d say the hand-crank machine is more difficult, simply because it only leaves you with one hand free to guide the fabric. I’d love to sew on a treadle someday…
